Crytal's Travel Gear Essentials For Dogs In Training

travel Mar 31, 2025

Getting ready to travel with your dog in training is simple.  Here are my favorites.  I have several backpacks for myself as I am a day hiker and overnight backpacker.  I have various sizes depending on how long I will be gone.  The pack or tote you choose holds all the gear you want for your dog on her trip with you. You can choose a day pack, duffel or a tote style.  Last month, I packed up my dog and I for a 10-day road trip with my mom to eastern Oregon.

For my dog, I chose one of my 30-liter day packs.  I prefer a backpack to keep my hands free when handling my dog and bringing her into the hotel room or cabin.  I always have my dog on a "car stay" while I unload the car with all the stuff, except for her gear pack.  Inside the hotel/cabin I get her mat/bed set up and ready for her to use immediately.

Inside of the 30-liter orange day pack, I have:   (gear for dog on 10 day road trip)

  • 10 bags of pre-measured dry dog food individually placed into Ziplock bags. My dog eats one meal a day.
  • I brought 3 Himalayan dog chews.  I chose not to pack them for this trip as they take up too much space in the orange 30 liter pack.
  • I have her daily brush, baby wipes, nitrile gloves and Andis nail grinder with a full charge.
  • E collar, transmitter and charger.
  • One silicone collapsible pack-able bowl that is used to feed and water her.
  • Her mat is a rubber back bathmat that rolls up and gets attached to the outside of the pack.
  • I have two 1-liter water bladders that fit in the One Tigris dog pack for outings.
  • 2 muzzles.
  • 1 flat collar.
  • One non chewable dog tether for use in the hotel room and car.

Separately packed is One Tigris pack with weights, a rain jacket for dog (I dislike wet dogs & I only need to dry her head and legs off) one dog towel (hotels will fine you if you get their towels “dog dirty”).    For this trip we took my mom’s Subaru Baja and my dog had to have her Impact crate plus a pack-able rip-stop tarp with paracord so I could make a tent shelter for her as needed!
